High Fiber Diet
Fiber is “ a virtually indigestible substance that is found mainly in the outer layers of plants.” Fiber is also sometimes called bulk or roughage. Fiber is essential for the proper functioning of the digestive system. Dietary fiber helps to correct problems that are associated with the colon (or large intestine) and to keep it working as well as possible. The number one job of the colon is to end the process of digestion by getting rid of excess water from wastes from food that has entered the large intestine from the small intestine. |

Foods that are high in dietary fiber help to improve many health conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), colon cancer and polyps in the colon, diverticulosis and so on. A low fat high fiber diet helps to keep the bowels working as they are meant to work and regularity is so important fro everyone. Fiber consumption is also relevant for adequate weight loss. When seeking out a high fiber diet also look for one that is low in cholesterol.
There are two types of fiber and these include insoluble fiber and soluble fiber. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water at all and this is the kind found in most vegetables. Insoluble fiber helps to prevent the build-up of gas from the intestines. Besides vegetable, insoluble fiber can be found in bran, rye, wheat and other types of grains. Soluble fiber does dissolve in water and it forms a kind of gelatinous substance in the bowels. Soluble fiber helps to bind up cholesterol so the body can excrete it. This can help to lower the quantity of blood cholesterol by 10 to 15%. Soluble fiber can be found in oat bran, oatmeal, fruit, barley, legumes and psyllium (such as Metamucil and Konsyl). The one problem with soluble fiber is that for those who suffer from flatulence it can make the problem a great deal worse. To add more dietary fiber to your diet choose whole grain foods such as bran cereals and whole-wheat grains as well as fresh fruits and stewed or dried fruits such as apricots, raisins, and prunes. Other foods that are high in dietary fiber supplements include root vegetables such as potatoes, turnips and carrots and fresh or raw vegetables such as cabbage for example. One of the best ways to have a high fiber diet is to eat bran cereal in the morning. The best options are All Bran, 100% Bran, Bran Buds, Raisin, oatmeal and oat bran. |
